The Council of Better Business Bureaus is the umbrella organization or hub for the local, independent BBBs in the United States, Canada and Mexico, as well as home to its national and international programs on dispute resolution, advertising review, and industry self-regulation.
Mission: To be the leader in advancing marketplace trust
How is this done?
- Setting standards for marketplace trust
- Encouraging and supporting best practices by engaging with and educating consumers and businesses
- Celebrating marketplace role models
- Calling out and addressing substandard marketplace behavior
- Creating a community of trustworthy businesses and charities
You may ask, what does the local BBB do if the Council does this?
Local BBBs carry out the mission in their communities, but Council regulates and makes sure each BBB abides by the same standard and rules. It’s a check and balance system. If BBB expects Accredited Businesses to abide by standards, then each local BBB is expected to do the same. This promotes continuity and consistency throughout the entire system.
The Council also serves as a hub for local BBBs to submit information, aggregating data to make resources available for national and international programs such as dispute resolution and advertising review. The Council also plays a role in warning businesses and consumers about scams and educating about various topics including changing laws, along with national and international programs, such as dispute resolution, advertising review and self-regulation.
BBB Scam Tracker
Our Scam Tracker is one example of data compilation. This tool is on BBB websites where consumers can report experiences from suspected scams. The public can tap into this tool, read how the scam works and hopefully be prepared and to not become a victim. https://www.bbb.org/scamtracker/us/
